These days this wine is topping my list of under-$20 great buys.
A Norwegian winemaker in Chile, you say? He's doing something right, beacause his Cab blows away most competition at this price. It's modern without being empty- it shows an intriguing balance between new and old world styles. A beautiful nose of cassis and mint with big tannins and lush fruit on the palate. It will improve over the next few years, as well as prove immediate pleasure for the impatient. -Rae

RDLR Syrah, Mendocino 2002 $24.99
This small bio-dynamic producer is making north coast Syrah that's not your typical Cali fruit bomb swimming in oak soup. Not that I'm biased. Seriously, I really dig this wine. A distinct raspberry and chocolate nose lead to a well-integrated, full body with fruit, tannins and oak all playing nicely together. Give it 30 minutes to an hour to breathe, then enjoy. -Rae
Hahn Pinot Noir, Monterey, 2005 $20.99
This has become one of my favorite Californian Pinots. Some prices might suggest that a smooth Pinot is more an occasion wine, but I disagree. The Hahn Family makes an exceptional example with a round, silky mouth feel and notes of dried fruit, toffee and bacon.
Now, listen very carefully, and do exactly as I say.
Open a bottle of this and enjoy with a crispy duck breast...then think of the Whip In. You're gonna' be happy, I promise. No really, I promise. -Rae
Artevino Merlot 2001 $29.99
This monster of a Merlot is incredible! Aged for an impressive 34 months in barrel, this wine is an excellent pair with game or a hearty stew. Grown in a cool climate in Northern California and made from 100% estate-grown fruit, this is not your average Cali Merlot. It shows a huge tannic structure with ripe fruit on the palate not unlike a Bordeaux. This wine is a steal for a collector, with a potential to improve over the next ten years and 33% lower price than from the winery itself.

Soligo Prosecco, NV $17.99
Prosecco, the Italian sparkler that charms us all- apparently even Paris of the Hiltons.
Commonly made in the tank method rather than fermenting in the bottle such as fine Champagne, this Italian cousin does not carry the hefty price.
Soligo makes a charming example with pleasing floral aromas, and lush peach and pineapple notes. Not as dry as many, this offers some sherry-esque tones that hint at a traditional blend Champagne.
